Vector-meson field theory and current algebra, magnetic monopoles, cosmic-ray processes, and multi-gamma-ray and direct-photon experiments at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings.
Scope
This is the earliest part of the record and it is entirely historical: seventeen catalogued items published between 1966 and 1982, more than two decades before the Institute existed. The work falls into three groups — theoretical papers on the strong and weak interactions, theoretical work on magnetic monopoles and cosmic-ray processes, and participation in a long-running collider experiment.
All of the work on this page predates the Institute and was carried out at Adelphi University, at Grumman Aerospace Corporation, or within collaborations centered on Brookhaven National Laboratory and the University of Rome. None of it is Institute research, and none of it is active.
Selected research history
Vector-meson field theory and current algebra, 1966–1969
Six papers in Physical Review and Physical Review Letters, carrying the affiliation Adelphi University, addressed the effect of intermediate vector mesons on neutrino production of lepton pairs, nonleptonic decays of the intermediate vector meson, the implications of vector-meson field theory and the partially conserved axial-vector current for electron–positron annihilation into hadrons, current-algebra determination of coupling parameters, and spectral density sum rules with zero-mass extrapolations. A 1969 paper in Physical Review Letters considered diffractional disintegration of hadrons at superhigh energies and the possibility of large quark production rates.
Magnetic monopoles and cosmic-ray processes, 1971–1982
Transition radiation from magnetic monopoles (Physical Review D 3, 1971) treated a signature by which a magnetic monopole traversing an interface might be detected, an instrumentation question as much as a theoretical one. A 1973 paper in the same journal computed the contribution of pion production by primary cosmic-ray nucleons to the interstellar electron–positron flux. Monopoles return in 1982 in Il Nuovo Cimento A, in work with L. E. Roberts on monopoles in high-transverse-momentum proton–proton collisions. Both 1971 and 1973 papers carry the affiliation Research Department, Grumman Aerospace Corporation, Bethpage, New York.
Multi-gamma-ray and direct-photon experiments at the CERN ISR, 1973–1982
From 1973 he appears as a co-author on a series of papers from an experiment at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings, with collaborators from Brookhaven National Laboratory and the University of Rome. The series runs from a search for high-energy multigamma events reported in AIP Conference Proceedings in 1973 and Brookhaven reports BNL-17861 and BNL-20644, through investigations of high-multiplicity gamma events in proton–proton collisions at center-of-mass energies between 22 and 62 GeV, J/ψ production and a high-mass electron pair limit, two-photon mass spectra, single direct photon production in the transverse-momentum interval 2.3 to 5.7 GeV/c (Nuclear Physics B 150, 1979), and a final multi-gamma-ray paper in Nuclear Physics B 209 in 1982. These are large-collaboration papers with up to fifteen authors, and the record reflects a contributing role in a collaboration rather than individual authorship.
The experiments were carried out at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. That is a statement about where the apparatus was; it is not a claim of an institutional relationship between the Institute and CERN, and no such relationship is claimed anywhere on this site.
Continuing research interests
Instrumentation for particle detection, applied nuclear physics and astrophysics, and the theoretical topics above remain listed research interests on the Adelphi University faculty record. No current work in these areas is claimed, and the Institute has published none since 1982.
